This prestigious event will gather global leaders in investment, government, and international organizations to address the theme, ‘Harnessing Digital Transformation and Sustainable Growth: Scaling Investment Opportunities’. His Excellency Khalid Al-Falih, Minister of Investment of Saudi Arabia, commented: “Under the wise leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques; King Salaman bin AbdulAziz Al Saud and His Royal Highness Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman bin AbdulAziz Al Saud, the Kingdom, driven by its ambitious “Vision 2030”, has become a premier world investment destination and is experiencing unprecedented growth in overall investment amounts and diversity.” “This year’s World Investment Conference in Riyadh will be a platform for sharing our nation’s strategic vision with our partners, and an invaluable opportunity to highlight our status as a trusted partner for sustainable economic growth. We look forward to welcoming investment leaders from around the world to forge partnerships that will benefit both the Kingdom and global economies.” Al-Falih added. Saudi Arabia has become a prime destination for international investors, issuing over 28,900 foreign investment licenses, thanks to reforms under Vision 2030. These reforms, including allowing 100% foreign ownership in specific sectors and streamlining business and visa procedures for rapid approvals, have significantly boosted investor confidence. This investor friendly climate, especially in sectors like renewable energy, logistics and AI, reflects the Kingdom’s dedication to creating an attractive and efficient business environment, and helps to build a resilient economy for Saudi Arabia that stands at the forefront of global innovation and development. Ismail Ersahin, Executive Director and CEO of WAIPA said: “WAIPA is excited to bring the 28th WIC to Riyadh, a city that perfectly embodies the future of investment. The conference will provide a crucial platform for Investment Promotion Agencies and investors to discuss emerging opportunities in a rapidly evolving global landscape. We deeply appreciate Saudi Arabia’s vision and leadership, which will ensure that this edition of WIC is an impactful gathering for all participants.” Key highlights of WIC 2024 will include a range of conference tracks, such as high-level government dialogues, insightful sessions on technology, sustainability, and economic cooperation, as well as practical masterclasses for investment professionals. A dedicated entrepreneurship track will emphasize the transformative role of startups and innovators, while exclusive matchmaking sessions will facilitate strategic partnerships between investors, SMEs, and potential collaborators. Participants will also have the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Investment Promotion Agencies through the Awards Track, honoring innovation and excellence in investment facilitation. Charles attended the show at the Royal Albert Hall in London for the first time as patron of the Royal Variety charity, following in the footsteps of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II. In a statement from Buckingham Palace, he said: “The charity’s crucial work in assisting those who have fallen ill, had an accident or hit hard times is as essential now as it ever has been. “I would like to thank all of those who have worked so hard to stage this year’s production and wish everyone a very enjoyable evening.” The performance saw political comic Forde reference the unfounded claims Mr Trump repeated during his presidential debate against Democrat candidate Kamala Harris earlier this year, that illegal immigrants from Haiti were eating locals’ pets in the small Ohio city of Springfield. Forde exclaimed in the president-elect’s voice: “They’re eating the cats, they’re eating the dogs!” He then turned to address Charles from the stage, saying in Mr Trump’s voice: “Your Majesty King Charles, you’re named after a spaniel – be very careful, they’ll eat you alive.” The King was seen laughing in response to the joke from the royal box. Charles appeared at the event without the Queen, who insisted the “show must go on” after pulling out of attending the performance on Friday evening as doctors advised that she should prioritise rest. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “Following a recent chest infection, the Queen continues to experience some lingering post-viral symptoms, as a result of which doctors have advised that, after a busy week of engagements, Her Majesty should prioritise sufficient rest. “With great regret, she has therefore withdrawn from attendance at tonight’s Royal Variety Performance. His Majesty will attend as planned.” A royal source said the Queen was “naturally disappointed to miss the evening’s entertainments and sends her sincere apologies to all those involved, but is a great believer that ‘the show must go on'”. “She hopes to be back to full strength and regular public duties very soon,” the source added. The Royal Variety Performance will air on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player in December. Money raised from the show will go to help people from the world of entertainment in need of care and assistance, with the Royal Variety Charity launching an initiative to help those with mental health issues this year.Hegseth nomination sinking fast in the Senate

US President-elect Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court on Friday to pause the potential TikTok ban from going into effect until his administration can pursue a “political resolution” to the issue. The request came as TikTok and the Biden administration filed opposing briefs to the court, in which the company argued the court should strike down a law that could ban the platform by January 19 while the government emphasised its position that the statute is needed to eliminate a national security risk. “President Trump takes no position on the underlying merits of this dispute. Instead, he respectfully requests that the court consider staying the Act’s deadline for divestment of January 19 2025, while it considers the merits of this case,” said Mr Trump’s amicus brief, which supported neither party in the case. The filings come ahead of oral arguments scheduled for January 10 on whether the law, which requires TikTok to divest from its China-based parent company or face a ban, unlawfully restricts speech in violation of the First Amendment. Earlier this month, a panel of three federal judges on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit unanimously upheld the statute, leading TikTok to appeal to the Supreme Court. The brief from Mr Trump said he opposes banning TikTok at this junction and “seeks the ability to resolve the issues at hand through political means once he takes office”.
stock could continue its gravity-defying run thanks to its "unprecedented" strategy. That's according to Bernstein analysts writing in a note to clients on Monday. Shares of MicroStrategy are already up 533% year-to-date, about triple the return of over the same time period. Yet, according to Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani, the rally in MicroStrategy could intensify. Chhugani increased his MicroStrategy price target to $600 from $290, representing potential upside of 49% from current levels. "MicroStrategy's Bitcoin treasury model is unprecedented on Wall Street," Chhugani said, calling the company a "Bitcoin magnet" for institutional investors. The software firm, led by founder and chairman Michael Saylor, currently owns 386,700 bitcoins, or about 1.8% of the total 21 million supply. According to Chhugani, MicroStrategy could eventually own 4% of the total bitcoin supply by the end of 2033 as it continues to raise capital at attractive deal terms to buy the cryptocurrency. Based on Bernstein's bitcoin price target of $1 million per token, that amount would be worth about 4% of the total supply. "Bitcoin bull markets would mean, the premium could stay higher than historical average, allowing MSTR to sell more debt/equity, leading to more bitcoin buying," Chhugani said. With a market valuation of nearly $100 billion, MicroStrategy trades at almost a 200% premium to the value of its $36 billion bitcoin stash. A key factor to Chhugani's bullishness on MicroStrategy is the fact that the company has positioned itself as the pioneer in the corporate world when it comes to adding cryptocurrency to its balance sheet. That strategy, which the company embarked on in August 2020, has allowed to buy more bitcoin. The company announced in October its over the next two years to buy bitcoin via debt and equity sales. Having already raised $9 billion since that announcement, Chhugani believes the company is ahead of schedule and could raise the remaining $33 billion within 18 months. But MicroStrategy's bull case ultimately hinges on and Chhugani views that as highly likely. The analyst estimates that bitcoin could hit cycle peaks of $200,000 in 2025, $500,000 in 2029, and $1 million by 2033. "Bitcoin is in a structural bull market with conducive regulation and U.S. government support, institutional adoption and favorable macro (low rates, inflation risk and record fiscal debt)," Chhugani said. hovering around $95,000 late in the afternoon on Monday. No. 24 Arizona is coming off consecutive defeats for the first time in the Tommy Lloyd era when it faces undefeated Davidson on Wednesday to begin the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas. Arizona (2-2) lost at Wisconsin 103-88 on Nov. 15 and followed that with a home loss against Duke 69-55 on Friday. The Wildcats have dropped 15 spots in the Associated Press Top 25 poll in two weeks. Arizona's record is .500 this early in a season for the first time since it was 3-3 to start the 2017-18 schedule. "I've got work to do, so let's get to work," said Lloyd, in his fourth year as Arizona's head coach. "Let's see where we're at in a month, and if we're still struggling, you know what I'll do? I still got work to do, but I'm gonna get to it." Arizona shot 39.6 percent from the field against Duke, and just 26.1 percent (6 of 23) from 3-point range. The Wildcats were outrebounded by 43-30 and their 15 turnovers led to 19 points. Jaden Bradley led Arizona with 18 points and KJ Lewis added 12. Preseason All-American Caleb Love had eight points on 3-of-13 shooting from the field, including 1-of-9 from 3-point range. Arizona made only one field goal in the last 5:39 as Duke pulled away after its lead was trimmed to six points. "We didn't play great," Lloyd said. "Now we need to take a step back and figure out why. Are there some schematic problems? Are there some problems with how our personnel is kind of put together? "We got to figure out what our certainties are, and the things we have to have, and then over the course of the next couple of days, if there's adjustments we need to make, we need to figure out what those are." Davidson is 4-0 after a 15-17 record last season, in which it lost its last six games to put an end to postseason hopes. A 93-66 win over visiting VMI on Friday followed a 91-85 win at Bowling Green and 76-70 victory over visiting East Tennessee State. The two wins by 10 points or fewer are important because Davidson was 6-12 in such games last season. It was 4-11 in games decided by five points or fewer. "The goal (is) to get better," Davidson head coach Matt McKillop said after the season opener. "We talk about fighting to win every possession. I think we had to figure out what that really felt like with the lights on." Davidson made 13 shots from 3-point range in the win over VMI. Reed Bailey had 23 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Bobby Durkin added 19 points, including 17 of them and a career-best five 3-pointers in the first half. Bailey leads Davidson in scoring (19 points per game) and rebounding (7.8). Durkin is shooting 57.9 percent (22 of 38) from the field and 54.2 percent (13 of 24) from 3-point range. By contrast, Arizona's Love is shooting 32 percent (16 of 50) from the field and 21.4 percent (6 of 28) from beyond the arc. Bradley leads Arizona with 15.5 points per game. He is shooting 50 percent (24 of 48) from the field and is 35.7 percent (5 of 14) from 3-point range. --Field Level MediaNEOSHO, Mo. — Joplin and Neosho were both shooting a head-scratching 20% from the field after the first quarter of their game on Friday afternoon at the Neosho Junior High in the Neosho Holiday Classic. The Eagles were efficient in the second quarter and grew their lead to 9 points at 22-13 going into halftime. They held off a late run by the Wildcats in the final quarter and earned a 41-40 victory, making Joplin girls 1-1 in the tournament and Neosho girls 0-2. "Yeah that was huge for us today. Coach (Tyler) Chaney does a great job down here (at Neosho). They were running a lot of box-and-one on Alissa Owens. The main way to beat a zone is to outrun it," Joplin head coach Brad Cox said. That's what Joplin did in the second frame as Aiyana Kroll got free and ran the floor quickly during some fastbreak opportunities, caught the passes and converted a couple layups to help stretch the lead. Kroll, Owens and Solei Parker really had it going in that frame as they were the only Eagles to score. Kroll tallied 6 in the second period alone and Owens and Parker added 4 each. Joplin used the fastbreak baskets to jump out to a 22-8 lead before Neosho converted the last 5 points of the quarter to make it 22-13 at half. Beclynn Garrett made a 3-pointer and Jazmyn Washington added a basket off an offensive rebound. "Neosho's always going to fight you to the very end. They're not going to give up," Cox said. "I'm very proud of our girls. It's very easy in that situation to feel like its slipping away. But we hit some big shots down the stretch." The Wildcats didn't give up. They came storming back late in the third quarter and never looked back. They had gotten within 4 points and caught a missed free throw and Garrett dribbled just about eight feet beyond half court and fired up a long-range triple and it was nothing but net to make it 41-40 with 1.6 seconds remaining. "We had a timeout right before that and coach (Chaney) was like, 'You have to have a quick three, it doesn't matter where you're at,'" Garrett said. "I just pulled up and shot it. I don't know how I made it. A little bit of a prayer there." "What a shot. I wouldn't expect anything else from her. Solei did a great job on her, limiting her for most of the game," Cox said. Joplin passed the ball in to Riley Kelly and there was no foul committed before the clock expired as the Eagles held on. There was confidence in the Neosho locker room despite trailing at halftime by 9 points. "We definitely weren't down at halftime. The score might have said we were down but we were in the locker getting hyped. We knew we could come back," Garrett said. "We've came from behind many times and we knew this was a game we could. "Unfortunately we didn't get all the way there but, man, we made it quite close." Garrett led all scorers with 25 points and she scored 12 of those in the fourth. She shot 4 for 6 overall in the final quarter, 2 for 3 from outside and 2 for 3 at the free throw line. She was 7 for 8 overall on free throws. Washington joined her in double figures with 11. Both players had seven rebounds. Joplin was led by Kroll's 12 points while Parker and Owens chipped in 9 each. Kroll was close to a double-double with nine rebounds. The Eagles attempted seven more shots in the game and Cox considers that a key factor for his team and the way they run their offense. "That starts with great defense and rebounding. I was very proud of our rebounding. That's been a struggle but we did a great job on the boards and boxing out today," Cox said. "Hats off to Kelly Kumbier. She's 5-6 and she's out there guarding a 6-1 girl." Neosho's Journey Arnall and Washington are both tall post players who are usually grabbing plenty of rebounds. That's who Kumbier had to battle against. Neosho had a slight advantage of 35-31 in rebounds. Joplin finished with a field goal percentage of 36%. It was 48% (12 of 25) in the second and fourth quarters. Neosho shot 32.6% overall and was 45% (10 of 22) in the second half. Joplin's Isabella Cruse hit a 3-pointer to get the lead up to 10 points at 29-19 late in the third. But that's when Neosho started to cut into the deficit. Garrett drew a foul and sank both free throws to get within 8 points with 1:45 left in the third. With 33.8 seconds remaining in the quarter she made a tough left-handed scoop layup and finished through contact. A foul was called and she added a free throw for an old-fashioned 3-point play to make it 29-24. That was the last score of the quarter. Joplin led by 10 at 36-26 in the final stanza and then held a 9-point lead at 38-29 with less than two minutes to play. Empty possessions by the Eagles gave Neosho opportunities to claw back. Jazmyn Washington made back-to-back baskets with the second coming with 1:25 left to play and the scoreboard showing a 38-33 advantage for Joplin. After a layup from Kroll, Neosho's Garrett buried a 3-pointer to inch closer at 40-36 with 55 seconds to play. After getting another stop, Garrett drew a foul and went to the free throw line where she had gone 6 for 6 on the day. Garrett made the first. But she missed the second shot off the side of the iron. That made it 40-37 with 16.5 seconds left. Cox took a timeout with 10.6 remaining. Then the Wildcats fouled with about 8.5 remaining. Parker made 1 of 2 free shots to make it 41-37.Can a 1950s Prime Minister’s Approach Work Today? Ishiba, LDP Attempt Multilateral Political Dialogue

I read with interest and concern the article “ Is being alone really so bad? Coping with loneliness by befriending ChatGPT and embracing solitude ” (Nov 23). While some people in Singapore may have little choice but to embrace loneliness due to their circumstances, we as a society should not stop looking for ways to combat this in the digital age. The World Health Organisation has found that loneliness is linked to serious health implications such as early death and dementia. I applaud organisations here like Friendzone for making efforts to stave off these negative outcomes. At a recent workshop for single LGBTQ people that I co-facilitated, the single most cited reason for participants wanting to find a date was companionship. I do not believe this would be very different for the heterosexual community, but the challenge may be amplified within minority communities. More Singaporeans young and old are staying or becoming single, and are at risk of becoming more lonely as well. I urge our health authorities to take a more active role and work with social organisations to address loneliness, as doing so could reduce negative health outcomes for a growing segment of the population. Republicans made strides on transgender issues this year. More efforts on the horizonArticle content While so many Oilers forwards not named Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl have struggled for to find some offence in the first quarter of the NHL season, one of the pleasant surprises has been role-playing winger Mattias Janmark. Janmark, who is playing 12:55 a night, has 10 points in 22 games, eight coming even-strength, one short-handed — a dandy feed to Darnell Nurse against New York Rangers last Saturday. He has just one goal, but, again, he has 10 points. The only Oilers forwards in double digits (points) are 97, 29 and Janmark. “Janne has played extremely well for four weeks,” said Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch, who currently has the Swedish forward on right wing on the third line with Adam Henrique and Jeff Skinner. “He rarely has a bad shift and we obviously rely on him on the penalty kill (with partner Connor Brown) with our forward group. A really nice play to Darnell short-handed. He carried the puck up, had an opportunity to shoot, then a wraparound try but he held it and found Darnell coming in late.” “We talk about players who do all the little things right and that’s Janne.” Janmark is never measured on his offence but after signing a three-year free-agent deal in July for a $1.45 million AAV he is very much underrated. While the Oilers lost lots of speed over the summer — Warren Foegele, Dylan Holloway and Ryan McLeod up front — Janmark is sneaky fast, turning 32 in two weeks. “I don’t really think about points much. I know when I’m playing good or not (points aside),” said Janmark, whose career high in points for a single season is 34 when playing for Dallas. NHL forwards coming into the league are always looked upon to put up points but that’s never been Janmark’s deal. When did points cease to be important to him? “When you’re younger you rely on them a bit more. You get hard on yourself if they (points) aren’t coming and then you go through stretches in your career when you’re simply not scoring. To stay in this league you have to find other things” apart from points, he said. Janmark was excellent in the Oilers playoff run last spring, especially in a penalty-kill role, but he also beat Sergei Bobvrovsky on a breakaway early in the first period of Game 7 in Florida to tie it 1-1 after Carter Verhaeghe’s Panthers’ goal. “I had a tough regular season, not many points (12 in 72 games), but you go through a good playoffs, yeah, it gives you confidence that you can do it at the highest level,” he said. SHOTS TO GOALS Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ career shooting percentage is 11.9, with his out-of-nowhere 18.4 in 2022-23 when he scored 37, but it’s 4.5 this season. He has 40 shots on net (80 attempted) and only two goals. “A forward’s average shooting percentage in the NHL is between nine and 15 percent. There’s a few players above that, exceptional shooters. Like Leon,” said Knoblauch. Draisaitl’s at 26.7 right now, with 16 goals on 60 shots and a career average of 18.5. Draisaitl was 14.3, 16.9, 12.3 shots-to-goals his first three seasons, but hasn’t had one under 18.5 over the past six years. “Leon can obviously shoot the puck well. That one-timer from a bad angle is difficult for a goalie to save if you hit the net. Also if you miss, well, that doesn’t count against the shooting percentage,” said Knoblauch. “Sometimes you have an outlier season where you’re shooting really well. Last year, Zach Hyman’s was 18.6 per cent but he is typically about 13 or 14. There’s a lot of luck, circumstances dictating scoring goals,” said Knoblauch. Nugent-Hopkins’s 4.5 per cent mirrors the scoring difficulties of most of the Oilers forwards. He was 9.8 per cent last season, with18 goals on 183 shots, so it’s going down. “Maybe you could say Nuge isn’t taking the same quality of shots as he should. The last two or three games, though, Nuge ripped one shot off the crossbar and hit the butt-end of the goalie’s stick in the Ranger game. That’s two goals, and his shooting percentage is 10 per cent,” said Knoblauch. This ‘n that : Newcomer Kasperi Kapanen and Derek Ryan were absent from Tuesday’s practice along with the injured Viktor Arvidsson and Hyman. “Kapanen had an immigration appointment,” said Knoblauch, in the wake of the Finnish winger’s waiver claim from St. Louis to Edmonton. “Ryan was sick.” ... Phil Esposito, who scored 717 goals, many from the high slot, said recently he used to employ a paddle like Draisaitl’s. Good company ... Evander Kane, who had surgery two months ago to repair two sports hernias and tears to two adductor and abdominal muscles, was seen walking around the Oilers dressing room Tuesday, with no visible movement issues. The time frame for a return is unclear but doctors said five to six months. He seems ahead of schedule. Would anybody be surprised if he’s back in January sometime? ... Unless the Oilers wanted to give up winger Matt Savoie, 20, to try and get Columbus right-shot defenceman David Jiricek, who turns 20 on Thursday and is unhappy there, is there any conceivable way the Oilers and Jackets are a fit? Savoie was the ninth-overall pick in 2022, Jiricek was sixth ... Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner, who got Marc-Andre Fleury’s stick autographed last week, wants to get more. “I’d like to get Vasy (Andrei Vasilevskiy) and (Sergei) Bobrovsky. I would have loved Carey Price’s. But I guess that won’t happen now. I did see him once in a hallway (during practice when Montreal was in town several years back). He said, ‘How are you doing?’ I, said, ‘Uh, good.’ I didn’t know what to say,” said the awestruck Skinner ... The Oilers will likely be adding a forward for their upcoming three-day trip to Utah, Colorado and Vegas. They’ll probably bring back fourth-line winger Drake Caggiula, who has been recalled twice for four games and who was sent back to Bakersfield for salary-cap reasons ... Seth Griffith was just named Bakersfield captain. Brad Malone was the former captain before retiring and taking a job as an assistant coach in junior in Oshawa ... Nashville got a fourth-round draft pick from Pittsburgh for forward Phil Tomasino on Monday. Must be the going rate now for former first-round draft forwards, with Oilers the giving Vancouver a fourth-rounder for Vasily Podkolzin in August ... Savoie and Noah Philp are percolating on the farm. The organization wants to leave them in the AHL to learn more. Barring a run of injuries here, you likely won’t see either player until the New Year ... James Hamblin remains out with a lower-body injury in Bakersfield ... Winger Roby Jarventie, acquired in the Ottawa Xavier Bourgault summer trade, remains out on the farm. He did play two games there after missing all of camp with a knee issue and had two points, but GM Keith Gretzky says they were maybe pushing things a little fast. The knee, different from the one operated on while playing in the Senators’ organization, isn’t strong enough for games just yet.
NEW YORK — The Jets (3-9) have suffered from a horrific season, but the hits keep coming. On Friday afternoon, Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich announced linebacker C.J. Mosley will be placed on injured reserve after being out the previous four weeks because of a herniated disk in his neck. With five games remaining, Mosley’s time with the Jets could be over. “A hard decision by a very (prideful) player, amazing player and leader,” Ulbrich said on Friday afternoon. “It was not an easy decision for him, but it is the best decision in our organization.” Mosley, 32, has been absent since the Jets’ Week 8 loss to the Patriots. The veteran linebacker injured his neck during pregame warmups ahead of the game and hasn’t played since. Before that, Mosley injured his big toe in Week 2 against the Titans and missed three games. With a new regime set to come in after coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas were fired during the season, Mosley’s time with the organization is likely over. He is under contract next year but has a $12.8 million cap number. If the Jets release Mosley with a June 1 designation, they would save $4 million. In 2019, Mosley signed a five-year, $85 million deal with the Jets. However, he only played in two games that season due to a groin injury. He missed the entire 2020 season after opting out because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2021, Mosley has been the Jets’ defensive leader. He has registered 495 tackles and 3.5 sacks during that span. He was also a 2022 second-team All-Pro and a 2022 Pro Bowler during that time. In addition to Mosley being out against the Dolphins, cornerback Sauce Gardner (hamstring) and running back Breece Hall (knee) are doubtful to play. Ulbrich told reporters that right tackle Morgan Moses (knee, shoulder) and right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle) are “trending in the right direction.” Hall’s injury dates back to the Jets’ loss to the Colts in Week 11 after a hyperextension of his knee, which according to Ulbrich, was “not feeling right.” Gardner injured his hamstring against the Seahawks during the second half. With Hall likely not able to play Sunday, rookies Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis will likely receive more carries against Miami. “Two rookies and Kene [Nwangwu], all three,” Ulbrich said about his running back unit against the Dolphins. “So, we hate to overuse a word, but we are fortunate in that way from the running back depth minus Breece, who from my opinion is one of the best running backs in this league. “We still have one of the best running back rooms in the NFL without him.” Thomas nominated for Payton award All 32 teams announced their nominees for this year’s Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award on Thursday. For the third consecutive season, defensive tackle Solomon Thomas was the Jets’ nominee. The award will be handed out during the NFL Honors ceremony on Feb. 6 in New Orleans. “It’s a huge honor,” Thomas said on Thursday. “I think it’s one of the highest honors in the league and the highest honor from the team and your community for the work that you do, it means the world. I truly believe we are here to make a difference and influence other people and make an impact. “I think as NFL players and professional athletes, we have a platform that’s given to us like no other. We have to use this platform to take advantage of it. It is something that has been instilled in me from my peers, my veterans in my family, my loved ones, and my girlfriend. To take advantage of that and be recognized for it, it means the world. You never do it for the recognition, you never do it for the award, you do it to impact and to change lives. But to be recognized means a lot.” Thomas is a co-founder of The Defensive Line, which is dedicated to his sister, Ella Elizabeth Thomas, who died by suicide at 24 years old. The mission of Thomas’ charity is to end youth suicide and raise awareness about mental health. In addition, Thomas works with organizations such as the Clinton Global Initiative, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Crisis Text Line. Last month, Thomas partnered with the Interfaith Food Pantry Network to host a Thanksgiving event supporting needy families. He helped provide 5,600 meals to Morris County residents in New Jersey facing hunger. Thomas also donated $8,000 to the Interfaith Food Network. “I really just wish the NFL would let all 32 guys win. Every individual does a different job and it is amazing. All of these guys impact the community in a tremendous way. They give back in a tremendous way whether it’s money donations, time, their foundations, just their effort putting a smile on people’s faces, giving people hope, there’s so many guys that make a big difference. I wish every guy can come out winning because they all deserve a trophy and they all deserve to win.” Nwangwu wins special teams honor In his first game with the Jets, Kene Nwangwu was honored after his terrific play against the Seahawks. Nwangwu was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 13. After being called up from the practice squad Saturday and signed to the active roster Monday, Nwangwu registered a 99-yard kick-return touchdown and forced a fumble during the Jets’ 26-21 loss to the Seahawks. “It felt good making a play,” Nwangwu said. “Getting that award, I think they usually give it out to for explosive plays and consistent plays, so that felt good.” The Vikings initially selected Nwangwu out of Iowa State in the fourth round in 2021. He led the league with two return touchdowns as a rookie. Nwangwu’s four return touchdowns are the second most among active NFL players. The Vikings waived Nwangwu last August and he was signed to the Jets practice squad in September after failing a physical with the Saints. “Guy shows up and does everything that we ask him to do, he has a smile on his face all the time,” Jets special teams coach Brant Boyer said about Nwangwu. “When a veteran player is put on the practice squad like that, I think that’s a really good lesson for, and I told the guys this, that I think it’s a really good lesson for any young player, or any veteran player for that matter. The guy did nothing but keep his head down, and keep working, and good things happen to people like that, and you know, he wasn’t over there sulking about his lack of playing time, he wasn’t sulking about not being on the active roster, he was working his butt off, and then when you get your opportunity, you make the most of it. And he certainly did, and that’s a credit to the kid and the way he prepares, and we’re happy to have him for sure.” ©2024 New York Daily News. Visit nydailynews.com . Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.November 21 - As the Brooklyn Nets begin a road swing on Friday with a visit to Philadelphia, the host 76ers are ending one of their own swings away from home that went poorly for the sputtering club. The 76ers into Friday's NBA Cup East: Group A matchup against the Nets on a five-game losing streak, including all three in the Sixers' just-completed three-game road trip. The journey ended on Wednesday in a 117-111 loss at Memphis, despite 2023 MVP Joel Embiid playing his best game of the season. Embiid finished with game highs of 35 points and 11 rebounds in his fourth contest since rejoining the Sixers lineup, after missing the first nine games with a lingering knee injury. Philadelphia is winless in Embiid's four appearances, have only two wins this season and none in NBA Cup action. The Sixers opened group play with a 111-99 loss to the New York Knicks on Nov. 12, followed by a 98-86 road loss to the Orlando Magic on Nov. 15. Philadelphia is now also dealing with another knee injury to a key player, as Paul George left Wednesday's game with a hyperextension. "Similar to the preseason," Sixers coach Nick Nurse said, referring to an injury George sustained in October. "We're going to find out more (Thursday) when (the medical staff) checks it out to see what the extent of it is." Nurse said George's injury may be akin to a bone bruise, which would not require a lengthy absence. Still, the team is awaiting more details ahead of Friday's return home. "You never know what happens," Nurse said. "He was actually fairly close to coming back in the game but then it stiffened up as he got out a little bit more, so we decided not to." Amid the rash of injuries and roster tumult, rookie Jared McCain is emerging as a bright spot in the Sixers' dismal start. Wednesday's 20-point performance marked the guard's sixth consecutive game scoring 20-plus points. McCain has made at least three 3-pointers in all six of those contests, while he averaged 25.5 points. The Nets ended a three-game losing streak Tuesday and improved to 1-1 in the NBA Cup, with a 116-115 victory over the Charlotte Hornets. Cam Johnson scored 34 points, while Trendon Watford hit a jumper with 38 seconds remaining that gave the Nets necessary breathing room down the stretch. Watford finished with 10 points over 19 minutes in just his second game back from a hamstring injury sustained in training camp. "Very happy that he had the game that he had, but that to me is the definition of a team," Nets coach Jordi Fernandez said. "Our medical staff worked hard to get him back healthy. We've got to trust the group, because they do a great job, and this is the result. It's a win for everybody." Nets point guard Dennis Schroder continued his run of solid two-way play at point guard in Tuesday's win. With his 14 points and 12 assists against Charlotte, Schroder is averaging 17.8 points and 6.5 assists in 15 games (all starts). --Field Level Media Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles. , opens new tab
DFC Celebrates Nearly $50 Billion Invested Over Five Years to Advance Development and U.S. Foreign Policy at 5th Anniversary Conference
Biden is considering preemptive pardons for officials and allies before Trump takes officeJacques Audiard’s audacious musical “Emilia Pérez,” about a Mexican drug lord who undergoes gender affirming surgery, led nominations to the 82nd Golden Globes on Monday, scoring 10 nods to lead it over other contenders like the musical smash “Wicked,” the papal thriller “Conclave” and the postwar epic “The Brutalist.” The nominations for the Globes, which will be televised by CBS and streamed on Paramount+ on Jan. 5, were announced on Monday morning by Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut. The embattled Globes, which are no longer presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are still in comeback mode after years of scandal and organizational upheaval. Working in the Globes favor this year: a especially starry field of nominees. Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig, Denzel Washington, Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Glen Powell and Selena Gomez all scored nominations. The young Donald Trump drama “The Apprentice” also landed nominations for its two central performances, by Sebastian Stan as Trump and Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn. The president elect has called “The Apprentice” a “politically disgusting hatchet job" made by "human scum.” How much the recent president election will figure into Hollywood's awards season remains to be seen. In the season's first awards ceremony, the Gotham Awards, Trump went unmentioned but sometimes alluded to. Stan also received a nomination Monday for the dark comedy “A Different Man.” While “Oppenheimer” and, to a lesser degree, “Barbie,” sailed into the Globes nominations as the clear heavyweights of awards season, no such frontrunner has emerged this year — and, with the exception of “Wicked," most of the contenders are far lighter on box office. The Globes don’t often align with the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, a much larger group that far more closely reflects the film industry. But they can give movies a major boost, and ripe fodder for their awards marketing. Netflix, which acquired “Emilia Pérez” after its Cannes Film Festival debut, dominated the nominations, leading all studios in both film nods (13) and in the TV categories (23). “Emilia Pérez," an operatic genre-skipping movie that combines elements of a narco thriller, a Broadway musical and a trans drama, scored nominations for its three stars: Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña and Gomez. No comedy or musical has ever received more Globe nominations. Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” landed seven nominations, including best picture, drama, and acting nods for Adrien Brody and Guy Pearce. The soon-to-be-released film, from A24, is uncommonly ambitious, with a runtime of three-and-a-half hours, including an intermission. A24 narrowly trailed Netflix in the film categories, scoring 12 nominations overall, including best actor, drama, for Hugh Grant's darkest turn yet in the horror film “Heretic.” Grant, in a statement, thanked the directors, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods “for spotting my need to kill." Close behind it was Edward Berger’s “Conclave,” starring Ralph Fiennes as a cardinal tasked with leading the conclave to elect a new pope. It landed six nominations, including best picture, drama, and acting nods for Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini. Sean Baker's Palme d'Or-winning “Anora,” starring Mikey Madison as a Brooklyn sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, was nominated for five awards, including best picture, comedy or musical, and best female actor for Madison and best supporting actor for Yura Borisov. The Globes will be hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, who scored her own nomination for best stand-up special. CBS, which began airing the Globes last year on a new deal, will hope Glaser manages to do better than last year’s emcee, Jo Koy, whose stint was widely panned. The nominees for best motion picture drama are: “The Brutalist”; “A Complete Unknown,”; “Conclave”; “Dune: Part Two”; “Nickel Boys;” “September 5.” The nominees for best film musical or comedy are: “Wicked”; “Anora”; “Emilia Pérez”; “Challengers”; “A Real Pain”; “The Substance.” Coralie Fargeat's gory body horror satire “The Substance," starring Demi Moore as an actress who resorts to extremes to stay young in a Hollywood obsessed with young beauty, landed five nominations overall, including nods for both Moore and her younger doppelganger, Margaret Qualley. Among animated movies, DreamWorks' “The Wild Robot” also had an especially good day. The tale of the shipwrecked robot came away with four nominations, including one for cinematic and box office achievement, a relatively new category populated by big ticket-sellers like “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Inside Out 2.” The strong showing suggests the other animated nominees — “Flow,” “Inside Out 2," “Memoir of a Snail," “Moana 2," “Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” — may have a hard time besting “The Wild Robot.” The Bob Dylan film “A Complete Unknown," starring Chalamet, also had a lot to celebrate. Coming off an endorsement from Dylan, himself, the film landed nominations for Chalamet, Edward Norton (who plays Woody Guthrie) and best picture, drama. Pamela Anderson also landed her first Golden Globe nomination. In “The Last Showgirl,” Anderson plays an aging Las Vegas showgirl, a performance that's led to the best reviews of Anderson's career. She was nominated for best female actor, drama, alongside Jolie ("Maria"), Nicole Kidman ("Babygirl"), Tilda Swinton ("The Room Next Door"), Fernanda Torres ("I'm Still Here") and — in a surprise — Kate Winslet ("Lee"). Anderson, reached by video conference Monday, said she put her whole life into the film. “I was making pickles and jam. I didn’t think I’d be doing any more in this industry,” said Anderson. “I was a little disappointed in myself and was kind of reassessing some of my life choices. But then this came up.” “The Bear,” which dominated the 2024 Globes, led all series with five nominations for its third season. That included nods for Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Liza Colón-Zayas and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Its stiffest competition this year might come in the FX series “Shogun" (four nominations, including acting nods for Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada) or Apple TV's “Slow Horses" (nods for Gary Oldman and Jack Lowden). “Only Murders in the Building” again led the comedy or musical category, with nominations for it stars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Gomez, her second nomination to go with hers for "Emilia Pérez." The Globes aren’t ever quite drama-free, but things have settled down for the embattled awards body. After The Los Angeles Times reported that the HFPA voters included no Black members, among other issues, most of Hollywood boycotted the show and the 2022 ceremony was scrapped. Last January's Globes were the first after the disbanding of the HFPA and their acquisition by Dick Clark Productions and billionaire Todd Boehly’s private equity firm Eldridge Industries. However, earlier this fall, the Ankler reported that former members of the HFPA filed a letter with the California attorney general’s office questioning “the validity of the purchase.” Though the 2024 Globes were mostly panned, ratings improved. According to Nielsen, some 9.5 million watched, leading CBS to give the show a five-year deal. Last year, the Globes introduced two new categories that remain this time around: the cinematic and box office achievement award and the best performance in stand-up comedy on television. One tweak this time comes in the lifetime achievement awards. This year, those are going to Ted Danson (for the Carol Burnett Award) and Viola Davis (for the Cecil B. DeMille Award). Those will be handed out in a gala dinner on Friday, Jan. 3, two days before the Globes. AP's Ryan Pearson in Los Angeles contributed to this report. Electoral authorities in the West African country announced Mahama's victory on Monday, confirming he received nearly 6.33 million votes (56.55%) compared to Bawumia’s 4.66 million (41.61%). This outcome marks Mahama’s return to the presidency after an eight-year hiatus, during which he faced two electoral defeats. The elections, held on Saturday, saw a voter turnout of 60%, a significant drop from 78.89% in 2020, reflecting voter disillusionment with the state of the economy under the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). Vice President Bawumia, the NPP candidate, conceded defeat on Sunday, even before the official results. He congratulated Mahama in a phone call, pledging to support a smooth transition. Mahama, representing the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), thanked Ghanaians for their trust. Campaign shaped by economic concerns Mahama’s campaign resonated with voters by focusing on Ghana’s economic crisis, characterized by rising inflation, a depreciating currency, and soaring public debt. He accused the NPP administration, under President Nana Akufo-Addo and Bawumia, of mismanagement. “This mandate represents many things for all political actors. It shows that Ghanaians have very little tolerance for bad governance," said Mahama in a victory speech late Monday. This is Mahama’s second electoral victory, following his 2012-2017 presidency. He previously lost to Akufo-Addo in 2016 and 2020, but this year’s campaign leveraged widespread discontent with the NPP government to secure a historic comeback. The NDC also gained a parliamentary majority, with preliminary results showing that two-thirds of the 276 seats went to the party. Challenges and transition Despite Mahama’s emphatic win, the election was not without challenges. Incidents of violence at some polling stations resulted in fatalities, raising concerns about electoral security. Nonetheless, international observers praised the overall conduct of the elections, commending electoral authority’s transparency. Mahama’s victory underscores Ghanaians’ demand for change as the country grapples with its worst economic crisis in decades. He is set to be sworn in on Jan. 7, as Akufo-Addo’s term ends. Mahama has promised to prioritize economic recovery, job creation, and infrastructure development, as well as investigate alleged mismanagement of state resources by the outgoing administration. Many Ghanaians believe Mahama’s return presents an opportunity to rebuild Ghana’s economy and restore public trust in governance.

NoneLos Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Ladd McConkey, listed as questionable due to a shoulder issue, is expected to play Monday night against the visiting Baltimore Ravens, NFL Network reported. McConkey missed practice on Thursday and was limited on Friday and Saturday. Star linebacker Khalil Mack, who was questionable because of a groin injury and was a limited participant, also is expected to play, according to the report. The Chargers (7-3) made several moves Monday ahead of the game against the Ravens (7-4), placing tight end Hayden Hurst (hip) on injured reserve, activating cornerback Deane Leonard (hamstring) off IR, signing cornerback Eli Apple from the practice to the active squad, and elevating linebacker Caleb Murphy and safety Tony Jefferson for game day. McConkey, 23, has started nine of 10 games and has 43 receptions on 63 targets for 615 yards and four touchdowns. The Chargers drafted the 6-foot, 185-pound McConkey in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Georgia. Mack, 33, is a three-time first-team All-Pro, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and the 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He has started the nine games he has played and has 26 tackles and 4.5 sacks this season. For his career, Mack has 617 tackles, 106 sacks, 141 tackles for loss, 178 quarterback hits, three interceptions -- two returned for touchdowns -- 32 forced fumbles and 13 fumble recoveries in 160 games (159 starts). He has played for the Raiders (2014-17), Chicago Bears (2018-21) and Chargers. Hurst, 31, has started two of seven games in his first season with the Chargers. He has seven receptions on 12 targets for 65 yards. A first-round pick (25th overall) by Baltimore in the 2018 NFL Draft out of South Carolina, Hurst has 202 receptions for 1,967 yards and 15 TDs in 86 games (41 starts) for the Ravens (2018-19), Atlanta Falcons (2020-21), Cincinnati Bengals (2022), Carolina Panthers (2023) and Chargers. Apple, 29, has two tackles in three games this season, his first with the Chargers. The 10th overall selection in the 2016 draft, Apple has 383 career tackles and six interceptions in 101 games (82 starts) for the New York Giants (2016-18), New Orleans Saints (2018-19), Panthers (2020), Bengals (2021-22), Miami Dolphins (2023) and Chargers. Leonard, who turned 25 last Tuesday, has four tackles in four games this season. His 21-day practice window on IR opened Wednesday. --Field Level MediaEarlier this year, New Hampshire lawmakers banned transgender girls from competing on girls’ school sports teams and prohibited some gender reassignment surgeries for minors. Those efforts will continue next year as several Republicans have filed draft legislation that could limit gender-affirming healthcare and revive a bill vetoed by the governor this summer that would have restricted access to bathrooms and locker rooms based on “biological sex.” Here’s what to look for during the upcoming legislative session: Weare Republican Lisa Mazur submitted two bill requests that would affect gender-affirming healthcare. One is “relative to health care professionals administering hormone treatments and puberty blockers,” though it doesn’t specify what that would entail at this early stage in the legislative process. Mazur declined an interview for this story. Full-fledged bills being drafted by the state’s Legislative Services office will become public in late December or early January. Other states have passed laws prohibiting transgender medical options, some of which are currently being challenged in the U.S. Supreme Court. Justices heard arguments in early December on whether to uphold a Tennessee law that bars minors from receiving gender transition care including surgeries, hormone therapy and puberty blockers. The Supreme Court appeared inclined to side with the state. Mazur’s same bill, according to the draft request title, would also relate to “school personnel attempting to influence a minor’s perception of his or her gender or sex.” Another bill, also requested by Mazur, would ban gender reassignment top surgery for minors, expanding on a law passed this year that prohibits minors from receiving genital gender reassignment surgery. Whitefield Republican Rep. Seth King submitted two bill draft requests that would, in theory, impact gender identity legal options and protections. He doesn’t plan to file either of them as bills in the upcoming session, he said – these were more of an exercise in planning to see what that policy language might look like should he choose to pursue them down the line. He hopes to share the drafts with other lawmakers and “bounce ideas around,” he said in an email. Article continues after... Cross|Word Flipart Typeshift SpellTower Really Bad Chess One of his hypothetical draft requests says it would remove gender identity from protections against discrimination, although specifics are unknown. Protections against sex discrimination are enshrined in federal law, and the Supreme Court ruled in 2020 that those protections also apply to discrimination over gender identity or sexual orientation, saying it’s impossible to discriminate against the latter two without also discriminating against the person for their biological sex. King’s other draft request would require gender identification to show as either male or female on driver’s licenses and non-driver IDs. New Hampshire residents can currently use an “X” instead of “M” or “F” to identify their gender on their license as nonbinary. This would appear to remove the “X” option. Rep. Jim Kofalt, a Republican from Wilton, will seek to revive a bill that passed the Legislature this year but was vetoed by Gov. Chris Sununu. Kofalt said he asked the Legislative Services department to copy his previous bill exactly – it would change the state’s Law Against Discrimination by permitting the classification of people by biological sex in certain areas, like bathrooms and locker rooms, athletics and sporting events where biological males are “generally recognized” as having an advantage, and in correctional and health facilities where people may be held involuntarily. It’s warranted, according to the previous bill, because it serves the “compelling state interests of protecting the privacy rights and physical safety of such persons and others.” The bill elicited backlash from LGBTQ rights advocates, and Sununu ultimately vetoed it, saying it sought to address issues that weren’t occurring in New Hampshire and that it invited “unnecessary discord.” Kofalt said his bill isn’t a mandate but would hand those decisions back to local towns, school districts and others. People on both sides of gender ideology issues have gotten too extreme, he said, and he views the bill as a “middle-of-the-road” solution. “I think people want to be respectful of other people, whatever their lifestyle is and however they choose to live their lives, but there’s got to be some balance and mutual respect, and so that’s what I’m aiming for,” Kofalt said. ‘Gladiator II’ review: Are you not moderately entertained?(The Center Square) – Homeowners in the market for washers and dryers may have better-performing options to choose from in the near future due to a bill limiting the extent of energy efficiency mandates on laundry appliances passing the U.S. House. The Republican-led House Resolution 1612 , or Liberty in Laundry Act, would prohibit the Secretary of Energy from enforcing energy conservation standards for clothes washers or dryers that “are not cost-effective or technologically feasible.” Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., who introduced the legislation, said the move is a response to the “slew of woke, ‘environmental’ nonsense rulemaking attempts” by the Biden administration and U.S. Department of Energy. “I have spent much of my time in Congress fighting back the federal government’s vast overreach into the lives of hardworking Americans,” Ogles announced after the bill’s passage Tuesday. “Americans should be able to do their laundry in peace without the input of Big Brother.” Earlier this year, the DOE finalized new updated standards for residential clothes washers and dryers which aim to cut costs and pollution. It estimates the regulations will reduce nearly 71 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions–equivalent to the combined annual emissions of nearly 9 million homes–and up to $39 billion on Americans’ energy and water bills over the next 30 years. House Democrats opposed the legislation's passage, saying "absolutely no one" stands to benefit from the law and accused Republicans of trying to curry favor with special interest groups. "H.R. 7673 guts popular energy efficiency standards for laundry machines – standards that save Americans money on their utility bills and reduce dangerous greenhouse gas pollution at the same time," said Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr., D-N.J. "These efficiency standards create certainty for manufacturers and they protect consumers from rising costs. And, in the case of these laundry machine standards, they also reduce water use – a benefit that could greatly aid drought-prone regions around the nation." But the less electricity and water laundry appliances use, the less effectively they tend to perform, according to an Oct. 2024 report by the Institute for Energy Research. “Historically, appliances meeting Energy Department standards have often underperformed and have higher costs,” the report stated. “The Biden-Harris administration is imposing a series of regulations that are raising appliance prices and compromising quality for homeowners.” Unless the bill is signed into law, laundry appliance makers have until March 2028 to comply with the new rules. (AP Photo/Rick Scuteri, File) SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers got two key defensive players back with linebacker Dre Greenlaw set to play his first game since tearing his left Achilles tendon in last season's Super Bowl and defensive end Nick Bosa returning after missing three games with injuries to his hip and oblique. Greenlaw had been practicing the past few weeks and was activated from the physically unable to perform list on Thursday to play against the Los Angeles Rams. San Francisco placed offensive lineman Ben Bartch on injured reserve with an ankle injury to make room on the roster. Bosa and running back Isaac Guerendo were both active for the game after being listed as questionable. Guerendo left Sunday's win over Chicago with a sprained foot. Greenlaw was one of the emotional leaders of San Francisco's defense before the freak injury in the first half of the Super Bowl loss to Kansas City. Greenlaw bounced up and down on the sideline and then started to run onto the field with a few teammates when he collapsed, holding his left leg. He was then helped off in a cart. Greenlaw was drafted in the fifth round in 2019 and emerged as one of the key defenders for San Francisco in 2022. He started 30 games the past two seasons with 247 tackles, eight tackles for loss, 10 passes defensed and three takeaways. The Niners have missed his intensity and physical play this season, especially against the run. The Rams and 49ers both promoted players from the practice squad for the game, with Los Angeles adding defensive back Charles Woods and San Francisco promoting running back Ke'Shawn Vaughn. The inactive players for the 49ers were left tackle Trent Williams (ankle), safety Malik Mustapha (chest, shoulder), running back Israel Abanikanda, cornerback Rock Ya-Sin and defensive tackle Khalil Davis. Joshua Dobbs was the emergency third quarterback. Cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. was active for the Rams for the first time since being claimed off waivers from Washington. The inactive players for Los Angeles were cornerback Cobie Durant (chest), running back Cody Schrader, linebacker Brennan Jackson and offensive linemen Dylan McMahon and Warren McClendon Jr. Stetson Bennett was the emergency third quarterback. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL Josh Dubow, The Associated Press See a typo/mistake? Stock market today: Wall Street gains ground as it notches a winning week and another Dow recordBiden on Tuesday ducked questions about his son, ignoring calls for him to explain his reversal as he was making his first presidential trip to Angola . He dismissed shouted questions about the matter with a laugh during a meeting with Angolan President João Lourenço at the presidential palace, telling the Angolan delegation: “Welcome to America.” Biden was not scheduled to take questions from the press during his trip to Africa, and he has largely avoided interactions with reporters since President-elect Trump’s victory last month. Biden’s decision to offer his son a blanket pardon for actions over the past 11 years has sparked a political uproar in Washington, after the president repeatedly had said he would not use his extraordinary powers for the benefit of his family. Biden claimed that the Justice Department had presided over a “miscarriage of justice” in prosecuting his son, using some of the same language that Trump uses to describe his own legal predicaments. Biden's reversal drew criticism from many Democrats , who are working to calibrate their approach to Trump as he prepares to take over the Oval Office in seven weeks. There is concern the pardon — and Biden's claims that his son was prosecuted for political reasons — will erode their ability to push back on the incoming president’s legal moves. And it has threatened to cloud Biden's legacy as he prepares to leave office on Jan. 20. Hunter Biden is the closest presidential relative ever to be granted clemency, but other leaders have pardoned family members and close friends. Bill Clinton pardoned his brother Roger for drug charges after Roger Clinton had served his sentence. By the time Trump left office after his first term, he had issued 144 pardons, which included Charles Kushner , the father of his son-in law, Jared Kushner. He also pardoned fervent supporters Steve Bannon, Roger Stone, Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn and other people convicted in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. In the months after the 2020 election, Trump and his allies were trying to overturn his loss, a failed effort that culminated in the violent riot by his supporters at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. There were discussions at the time over whether Trump would preemptively pardon some of those involved in the effort — and maybe even himself — before he left office. But that never happened. Now, Democrats are having similar discussions about preemptive pardons on their side because of Trump's rhetoric on the campaign trail. He's made no secret of his desire to seek revenge on those who prosecuted him or crossed him. He talks about "enemies from within." He's circulated social media posts that call for the jailing of Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former Vice President Mike Pence and Sens. Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer. He's also taken aim at Liz Cheney, a conservative Republican who campaigned for Harris, promoting a social media post that suggested he wanted military tribunals to punish her because she was guilty of treason. Sen. Ed Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, said last week on Boston Public Radio that Biden might consider broad pardons to protect people against whatever wrath Trump may seek, but also as a way to move the country past this acrimonious and divided time. “I think that without question, Trump is going to try to act in a dictatorial way, in a fascistic way, in a revengeful first year at least of his administration toward individuals who he believes harmed him,” Markey said. Presidents enjoy expansive pardon powers when it comes to federal crimes . That includes granting clemency to people who have not yet been charged, as President Gerald Ford did in 1974 when he pardoned his predecessor, Richard Nixon, over the Watergate scandal. The decision at the time caused an uproar but has been seen in the ensuing decades as a move that helped restore order. Markey cited Ford's pardon as a way for the country “just to close that chapter and move on to a new era.” Biden could do the same, Markey said, to help the country move on “to an agenda that deals with the ordinary families.” Sen. Joe Manchin, the Democrat-turned-independent from West Virginia, took it a step further and suggested Biden should even pardon Trump for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, federal charges that are now evaporating with Trump's upcoming return to the White House. “Why don't you go ahead and pardon Donald Trump for all his charges?" he said in an interview with CNN. “It would have gone down a lot more balanced. I'm just saying, wipe them out.” At the same time, Democratic lawmakers and criminal justice reformers are pushing Biden to grant pardons to broad groups of Americans. Democrats Ayanna Pressley, Jim Clyburn and Mary Gay Scanlon wrote to Biden on Nov. 20, asking him to use his clemency powers to "address longstanding injustices in our legal system, and set our nation on the path toward ending mass incarceration.” The letter, also signed by 61 others, suggested Biden could use his powers to send a powerful message of criminal justice reform and "rectify unjust and unnecessary criminal laws passed by Congress and draconian sentences given by judges.” “We encourage you to use your clemency powers to help broad classes of people and cases, including the elderly and chronically ill, those on death row, people with unjustified sentencing disparities, and women who were punished for defending themselves against their abusers,” they wrote. So far, Biden has pardoned 25 people. Most presidents tend to grant a flurry of clemency requests at the end of their terms, and it's likely Biden will do the same. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has said Biden is “thinking through that process very thoroughly.”

FCM automates the process of locating and assigning firestop solutions to conditions within Autodesk ® Revit ® , enabling firestop novices to find firestop solutions like a firestop expert. In this latest release, STI has further expanded the capabilities of FCM by integrating it with their firestop documentation and compliance tool, Firestop Locator (FSL). FSL enables contractors and facilities' teams to document the status, location, and products used for any and all fire life safety services across a building. In the latest update for FSL, teams can now create custom items to track any service on their project beyond the base six (Penetration, Joint, Extinguisher, Door, Damper, and Barrier). Teams can also modify the base six items to include project specific inspection and maintenance requirements and any other details that they would like to be tracked. With this new integration, decisions made during the design phase of a building using FCM are seamlessly passed into FSL during the construction phase, giving implementation teams a jump start on work to be done. The 2023 low price from remains the next target at 1.0448. Move below that and the 50% of the move up from the 2022 low to the 2023 high comes in at 1.0405. A bounce higher could see more upside momentum on a move above the high of a swing area at 1.05316. Get and stay above that and the 100 hour MA at 1.0555 (and moving lower would be targeted. USDJPY: The USDJPY moved lower in the early Asian session and bounced off the 100 bar MA on the 4-hour chart at 153.88 currently. The price bounced up toward the falling 100 hour MA at 154.72 and the 200 hour MA at 154.89. A move above those levels would tilt the bias more to the upside once again as the ups-and-down for the week continue into the last day of the week. Stay below the hourly MAs, and the 100 bar MA on the 4-hour chart will be eyed as key support. GBPUSD: The GBPUSD moved to the lowest level since May with a break of the low from last week at 1.2596. The low reached 1.2575 and bounced back to the 1.2596 low from last week. Buyers and sellers are battling around that level. IN the new day, watch a move above 1.26137. If there is momentum, it could tilt the sellers to buyers with the 100 bar MA on the 4-hour chart at 1.2649 as the target. That MA did a good job of stalling the rallies today. in the Asian and US morning session. AUDUSD: For the AUDUSD the last three trading days had found support near the pairs 100 hour MA. That rising moving average currently comes in and 0.6501 which is just below the 200 hour moving average at 0.6504. That area will be a key barometer for the pair today and going forward. Stay above and more upside probing can be expected. Move below and the bias shifts more to the downside technically. Thank you for your support. Good fortune with your trading.Title: Red Devil Castaway Shining in Ligue 1! Scored 11 Goals in 14 Matches, Set to Play in Champions League Next Year
In recent years, the relationship between China and South Korea has seen a significant improvement on many fronts. One particular aspect that has contributed greatly to this warming of relations is the implementation of a visa-free policy for Chinese tourists visiting South Korea for up to 30 days. This move, known colloquially as the "visa-free month," has not only opened up opportunities for Chinese travelers to explore South Korea more freely but has also played a crucial role in fostering mutual understanding and appreciation between the two nations.Cowboys G Zack Martin, CB Trevon Diggs out vs. CommandersWayanad : Electoral debutant and All India Congress (AICC) General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi won the Wayanad Lok Sabha by-poll with a majority of 410931 votes, breaking the constituency’s record of 3.64 votes set by her brother Rahul Gandhi. Priyanka won the Wayanad constituency with a total of 6,22,338 votes against 2,11,407 votes secured by the Left Democratic Front candidate, CPI’s Sathyan Mokeri. Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had won back-to-back electoral contests from this Kerala hill constituency in 2019 and 2024. However, he vacated it after winning from the family’s Uttar Pradesh bastion Rae Bareilly this year, following which the party fielded Priyanka. And she triumphed with an impressive margin of over 4.10 lakh votes, demonstrating Wayanad’s preference for the Gandhi family. In a major boost to the opposition Congress-led UDF, the grand old party retained the Palakkad Assembly seat with its candidate Rahul Mamkootathil winning by a significant margin of 18,840 votes, pushing the ruling Left bloc to the third spot. Mamkootathil secured 58,389 votes as against BJP’s C Krishnakumar who garnered 39,549 votes, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI). LDF candidate Dr P Sarin, the former Digital Media Convener of KPCC who switched to the Left after the national party announced the candidacy of Youth Congress state president Mamkootathil, finished third with 37,293 votes. Krishnakumar initially led the race. However, Mamkootathil gained a narrow lead of 1,425 votes in the seventh round of counting and then on, steadily increased his margin in the subsequent rounds. The present by-election was necessitated by the resignation of Congress’ Shafi Parambil, who vacated the seat after being elected to the Lok Sabha from Vadakara in the general election this year. The BJP-NDA nominee, K Balakrishnan, finished in third position with 33,609 votes, the figures showed. Though six candidates were in the fray in Chelakkara, the main contest was between Pradeep and Haridas. A by-poll was necessitated in the Chelakkara segment, a Left stronghold for years, as the then MLA and former devaswom minister K Radhakrishnan was elected to the Lok Sabha earlier this year. Currently, only the US, China and Russia possess fifth-generation fighters deployed within their militaries. This article will explore these fighters a bit of their history and of course their capabilities. I will focus solely on fifth-generation aircraft that are currently in production and are still making their way into their respective militaries. About Fifth-generation fighters Fifth-generation fighter aircraft stand apart from previous generations due to their advanced stealth technology, advanced sensors and their compatibility to operate within a network-centric strategy and force, framework. As such, a fifth-generation fighter's sensors, computing and communication systems will allow it to gather exploit and transfer information at such a high level that it acts as a force multiplier for within its area of operations. The Su-57 program was initiated in 1999... Network-Centric Warfare refers to a military strategy that harnesses advanced information technologies in order to enhance the situational awareness and operational capabilities of a combat force. This mode of warfare integrates various sensors and systems into a cohesive network which facilitates real-time communication and information sharing, ultimately increasing the lethality of the force or joint-force. A look at the military aircraft designed to ensure “operational flexibility” for years to come. Fifth-generation fighters in production and deployment today The Russian Sukhoi Su-57 “Felon” The Su-57 is a twin engine multi-role aircraft, it was designed to succeed the Mig-29 and the Su-27. The Su-57 program was initiated in 1999 and, after repeated delays, the first models entered service with the Russian Aerospace Forces in December 2020. It was expected that the Su-57 would have up to 150 aircraft by 2025; however, approximately 20 aircraft have been built at this point. This aircraft is expected to have a service life of up to 35 years. The Su-57 is reportedly the first Russian aircraft to use stealth technology; it was designed to include a substantial amount of composite materials. This material represents 25% of the structural weight and almost 70% of the outer surface. Additionally, the Su-57 sports internal weapons bays, increasing its stealthy edge. Basic specifications for the Su-57 General Specifications Related Data Range 1,900 nautical miles Ceiling 66,000 ft. Top Speed 1,527 mph Maximum payload 22,046 lbs Details provided by UltimateSpecs While a pre-production prototype, poor workmanship on the Su-57 displayed in China has drawn ridicule. In spite of its advancements, Rand Corporation's analysis of this aircraft’s 360-degree sensor suit states that the system remains incomplete. This is likely the result of international sanctions placed on Russia following its 2014 invasion of Ukraine. The J-20, while highly maneuverable, it is heavier than the F-35 and F-22, yet it possesses stealth characteristics... In addition to this, the Su-57 lacks the sensor fusion of the F-35, which is arguably hard to measure up to, and the radar cross-section of the Su-57 is roughly the same as a fourth-generation fighter despite its improved stealth technology. This makes its radar cross-section 1000 times larger than an F-35. This has led some experts to state that the Su-57 isn’t a true fifth-generation aircraft, but this all depends on who you ask. The Chinese J-20 “Mighty Dragon” The J-20 is China’s answer to US fifth-generation fighter aircraft and is a centerpiece of their military modernization program (combined with their impressive naval advancements). The J-20, developed by Chengdu Aerospace Corp, is a twin-engine, single seat, multi-role jet that had its first flight in 2011. The J-20, while highly maneuverable, is heavier than the F-35 and F-22, yet it possesses stealth characteristics and an internal weapons bay. The J-20 is believed to have advanced avionics and sensors that provide enhanced situational awareness, advanced radar and tracking capability, and integrated electronic warfare systems. Basic Specifications for the J-20 General Specifications Related Data Range 3,418 mi. Ceiling 65,617 ft. Top Speed 1,522 mph Maximum Takeoff Weight 37,000 lbs Details provided by Globalmilitary.net In a war over Taiwan, most US and Japanese F-35s lost will likely be destroyed on the ground by missiles. However, it is difficult to verify the effectiveness of these systems as the J-20s performance capabilities are tightly guarded, and it has not been involved in any combat action to date. In sum the Department of Defense is seeking to procure 2,456 F-35s and US allies are expected to purchase hundreds more. Retired Gen. Hawk Carlisle, president and CEO of the National Defense Industrial Association and former commander of Air Combat Command, asserts that the J-20, based solely on the shape of its airframe, would be detected almost immediately by US fifth-generation aircraft. He states: “The J-20, in my estimation, would be dead long before it had the ability to maneuver against either the F-22 or the F-35,” he said. “It’s got enough spikes on it to where the radar returns on it are likely to be much more significant, which means that the F-22 and the F-35 can see it a lot farther away.” Whether or not the J-20 measures up to American fifth-generation aircraft or not, Beijing is doubling down on their continued development, purchase and integration into the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). Currently, the PLAAF is operating approximately 195 J-20s, with many more to come. The American F-35 Lightning II The Lockheed Martin F-35 is a strike fighter that first took flight in 2006. It is being produced in three variants: the F-35A for the Air Force, the F35B for the Marine Corps, and the F-35C for the Navy. Desired fleet numbers by branch: Air Force: 1,763 F-35As, conventional takeoff and landing Marine Corps: 353 F-35Bs, short takeoff and vertical landing Navy: 273 F-35Cs, specifically designed to operate from an aircraft carrier Details provided by the Congressional Research Service Basic Specifications for the F-35 General Specifications Related Data Range 1,350+ mi. Ceiling 50,000+ ft. Top Speed 1,200 mph Maximum Takeoff Weight 70,000 lbs Details provided by the USAF In sum, the Department of Defense is seeking to procure 2,456 F-35s and US allies are expected to purchase hundreds more. This will give the US and its allies a common aircraft, common tactical doctrine and a common logistics and spare parts system to support this aircraft, greatly increasing efficiency. With its unique stealthy design, the F-35 has a radar cross-section...roughly the size of a golf ball. The F-35's sensing capabilities The advanced sensors onboard the F-35 enable this aircraft to act as an aerial node for the sensing, processing and sharing of critical, mission sensitive data across the force in a theater of operations. According to Lockheed Martin , the F-35 sensor suite includes the following AN/APG-81 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar AN/ASQ-239 Electronic Warfare (EW)/Countermeasures (CM) system AN/AAQ-40 Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) AN/AAQ-37 Electro-Optical (EO) Distributed Aperture System (DAS) AN/ASQ-242 Communications, Navigation, and Identification (CNI) avionics suite. Once complete, the TR-3 will significantly boost the F-35's computing power, paving the way for more powerful upgrades. These five sensors provide the F-35 with incredible object detection and measurements in the radio frequency and infrared spectrum. This sensing capability allows the F-35 to gather, process, and disseminate more information about the surrounding environment than has ever been available on a fighter aircraft. Stealth The F-35 utilizes smooth, blended surfaces as well as sawtooth edges in addition to sharp internal angles. These features are all designed to minimize radar reflection. Like the previously mentioned aircraft the weapons of the F-35 are stored internally, however it has the ability to mount weapons externally if need be. With its unique stealthy design, the F-35 has a radar cross-section (RCS) of 0.0015 square meters, roughly the size of a golf ball. However, this pales in comparison to the F-22, which has an RCS of 0.0001~0.0002 square meters, or the size of a marble. Fifth-generation aircraft competing for supremacy Russia, China and the US all have their own variation of a fifth-generation aircraft, though it can be disputed if the Russian and Chinese aircraft truly constitute this designation, this is still debated. What is not debated is that China and the US have the production capacity and funding to push their respective fifth-generation aircraft into mass-production. Presently, the US has the lead in this regard, the F-35 is already integrated into allied militaries, deployed globally, and the F-35 is combat tested. What is interesting is that the Israel attack on Iran showcased the F-35's capabilities against a foreign state with capable air defenses. Israel entered Iranian airspace, destroyed sites related to their ballistic missile program, and destroyed air defenses and other targets, all without losing a single aircraft to Iran's Russian air defense systems. This could be seen as a green light to demonstrate to China the capabilities of US airpower by proxy, as China's air defenses are primarily copies of Russian systems. So, the Israeli attack could easily be seen as messaging to China. Moving to the J-20, which has yet to see combat and has not been sold to a foreign customer, much about this aircraft is still unknown. Yet, China will produce this aircraft in such great quantities that it will be able to more effectively compete for control of regional airspace with respect to other air forces in the East Asia region. For the foreseeable future, the F-35, F-22 and the J-20 will be competing for dominance in the skies over Asia as well as globally if China can begin exporting the J-20.
Scientists literally are shining a light on cancer cells’ energy centers to damage these power sources and trigger widespread cancer cell death. In a new study” ” in , researchers combined strategies to deliver energy-disrupting gene therapy using nanoparticles manufactured to zero in only on cancer cells. Experiments showed the targeted therapy is effective at shrinking glioblastoma brain tumors and aggressive breast cancer tumors in mice. The team says it overcame a significant challenge to break up structures inside these cellular energy centers (mitochondria) with a technique—mLumiOpto—that induces light-activated electrical currents inside the cell. “We disrupt the membrane so mitochondria cannot work functionally to produce energy or work as a signaling hub. This causes programmed cell death followed by DNA damage. Our investigations showed these two mechanisms are involved and kill the cancer cells,” said co-lead author Lufang Zhou, PhD, professor of biomedical engineering and surgery at The Ohio State University. “This is how the technology works by design.” Zhou collaborated on the research with co-lead author , PhD, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Ohio State, who developed the particles used to precisely deliver the gene therapy to cancer cells. Zhou and Liu are also both investigators in the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. Mitochondria have been considered an attractive anti-cancer therapeutic target for years, but their impermeable inner membrane complicates these efforts. Zhou’s lab cracked the code five years ago by figuring out how to exploit the inner membrane’s vulnerability—an electrical charge differential that keeps its structure intact and functions on track. “Previous attempts to use a pharmaceutical reagent against mitochondria targeted specific pathways of activity in cancer cells,” he said. “Our approach targets mitochondria directly, using external genes to activate a process that kills cells. That’s an advantage, and we’ve shown we can get a particularly good result in killing different types of cancer cells.” Zhou’s earlier cell studies showed the mitochondrial inner membrane could be disrupted by a protein that creates electrical currents, and researchers activated that light-induced protein with a laser. In this new work, the team created an internal source of light, which was critical to translating the technology for clinical use. The strategy involves delivering genetic information for two types of molecules: a light-sensitive protein known as CoChR that can produce positively charged currents, and a bioluminescence-emitting enzyme. Packed into an altered virus particle and delivered to cancer cells, the proteins are produced as their genes are expressed in mitochondria. A follow-up injection of a specific chemical turns on the enzyme’s light to activate CoChR, which leads to mitochondrial collapse. The other half of the battle is ensuring this therapy does not interfere with normal cells. Liu’s lab specializes in targeted anti-cancer therapy development. The foundation for the delivery system in this work is the well-characterized adeno-associated virus (AAV) engineered to carry genes and promote their expression for therapeutic purposes. The team refined the system to enhance its cancer specificity by adding a promoter protein to drive up expression of the CoChR and bioluminescent enzyme only in cancer cells. The researchers also manufactured the AAV using human cells that encased the gene-packed virus inside a natural nanocarrier resembling extracellular vesicles that circulate in human blood and biological fluids. “This construction assures stability in the human body because this particle comes from a human cell line,” Liu said. Finally, the researchers developed and attached to the delivery particle a monoclonal antibody designed to seek out receptors on cancer cell surfaces. “This monoclonal antibody can identify a specific receptor, so it finds cancer cells and delivers our therapeutic genes. We used multiple tools to confirm this effect,” explained Lin. “After constructing AAVs with a cancer-specific promoter and a cancer-targeting nanoparticle, we found this therapy is very powerful to treat multiple cancers.” Experiments in mouse models showed the gene therapy strategy significantly reduced the tumor burden compared to untreated animals in two fast-growing, difficult-to-treat cancers: glioblastoma brain cancer and triple negative breast cancer. In addition to shrinking the tumors, the treatment extended survival of mice with glioblastomas. Animal imaging studies also confirmed the effects of the gene therapy were limited to cancer tissue and were undetectable in normal tissue. Results further suggested that attaching the monoclonal antibody had the added benefit of inducing an immune response against cancer cells in the tumor microenvironment. The team is studying additional potential therapeutic effects of the mLumiOpto in glioblastoma, triple negative breast cancer and other cancers. Ohio State has submitted a provisional patent application for the technologies. The Radio 1 DJ competed in his sixth consecutive Bushtucker Trial I'm A Celebrity viewers were confused after Dean McCullough's turnaround on tonight's show. Ant and Dec fronted Monday's edition of TV's toughest entertainment challenge. Radio 1 DJ Dean has been the show's most controversial campmate so far as he has been voted to compete in six consecutive Bushtucker Trials. The DJ was devastated to be voted once again for tonight's challenge and has struggled to adapt to the Trials so far. He was called out by Coleen Rooney in last night's programme, who insisted Dean shouldn't be afraid of Monday's challenge, which was named Jack and the Scream Stalk. The 38-year-old from Croxteth said the challenge would related to heights and reminded Dean of a comment he had previously made in the jungle. She added: "You said crossing the bridge that heights don't bother you." Tonight's challenge saw Dean ascend a rock climbing frame as he needed to collect stars from 12 boxes. Each hole contained critters such as cockroaches, giant mealworms and spiders. The DJ also had to piece together the golden egg which constituted star number five. Dean fared much better in the Trial than he had done previously as he achieved a personal best of 10 stars. However, the DJ soon tired and shouted "sorry" as he fell off the climbing frame. Dean won praise from fans on social media platform X after his changed approach to the trial. However, some viewers claimed the Trial was the easiest yet as the stars were placed above the critters. Abbey said: "This trial just seems like a genuinely fun day out to me. A bit of rock climbing? Don’t mind if I do" Kirsty added: "Sorry but other than the climbing this trial is easy? Just reaching in and grabbing the star." Joe commented: "Easiest trial yet. What’s the point of the hell holes if the star is on a string above the critters? Literally doesn’t matter what was in the box" Millie posted: "That trial was so easy." Sezzy commented: "This is way too easy he's not even having to touch the critters *yawn*
Billionaire Israel Englander Is Selling Nvidia and Palantir and Buying a New Stock That Wall Street Thinks Can Soar as Much as 151% - Yahoo FinanceFLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets running back Breece Hall could play Sunday at Jacksonville after missing a game with a knee injury. Hall has been dealing with a hyperextension and injured MCL in his left knee that sidelined him last Sunday at Miami. But he was a full participant at practice Friday after sitting out Wednesday and Thursday. Hall was officially listed as questionable on the team's final injury report. “He looks good right now,” interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said. “So it’s promising.” Hall leads the Jets with 692 yards rushing and four touchdown runs, and he also has 401 yards receiving and two scores on 46 catches. A pair of rookies helped New York offset Hall's absence last weekend, with Braelon Allen rushing for 43 yards on 11 carries, and Isaiah Davis getting 40 yards on 10 attempts and scoring his first rushing touchdown. “We’re hopeful and we’ll see how it goes,” Ulbrich said of Hall. The Jets will get star cornerback Sauce Gardner back after he missed a game with a hamstring injury, but New York's secondary appears likely to be without cornerback D.J. Reed because of a groin injury. Reed was listed as doubtful after he didn't practice Thursday or Friday. “It’s been something that’s kind of lingered here and there,” Ulbrich said. “It’s gotten aggravated and then it went away, and then it got aggravated again. So, it’s just dealing with that.” Backup Brandin Echols is out with a shoulder injury, so veteran Isaiah Oliver or rookie Qwan'tez Stiggers could get the start opposite Gardner if Reed can't play. Kendall Sheffield also could be elevated from the practice squad for the second game in a row. Ulbrich said kick returner Kene Nwangwu will be placed on injured reserve after breaking a hand last weekend at Miami. The injury came a week after he was selected the AFC special teams player of the week in his Jets debut, during which he returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and forced a fumble in a loss to Seattle. “To put him out there with a broken hand, just thought it’d be counterproductive for him and for us as a team, so it unfortunately cuts the season short and what a bright light he was,” Ulbrich said. “What an amazing future I think he has in this league. With saying that, he’s already been a really good player for quite a while, so (it's) unfortunate, but he’ll be back.” Offensive lineman Xavier Newman (groin) is doubtful, while right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle) and RT Morgan Moses (wrist) are questionable. WASHINGTON—As a former and potentially future president, Donald Trump hailed what would become Project 2025 as a road map for “exactly what our movement will do” with another crack at the White House. As the blueprint for a hard-right turn in America became a liability during the 2024 campaign, Trump pulled an about-face. He denied knowing anything about the “ridiculous and abysmal” plans written in part by his first-term aides and allies. Now, after being elected the 47th president on Nov. 5, Trump is stocking his second administration with key players in the detailed effort he temporarily shunned. Most notably, Trump has tapped Russell Vought for an encore as director of the Office of Management and Budget; Tom Homan, his former immigration chief, as “border czar;” and immigration hardliner Stephen Miller as deputy chief of policy. Those moves have accelerated criticisms from Democrats who warn that Trump’s election hands government reins to movement conservatives who spent years envisioning how to concentrate power in the West Wing and impose a starkly rightward shift across the US government and society. Trump and his aides maintain that he won a mandate to overhaul Washington. But they maintain the specifics are his alone. “President Trump never had anything to do with Project 2025,” said Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt in a statement. “All of President Trumps’ Cabinet nominees and appointments are whole-heartedly committed to President Trump’s agenda, not the agenda of outside groups.” Here is a look at what some of Trump’s choices portend for his second presidency. As budget chief, Vought envisions a sweeping, powerful perch The Office of Management and Budget director, a role Vought held under Trump previously and requires Senate confirmation, prepares a president’s proposed budget and is generally responsible for implementing the administration’s agenda across agencies. The job is influential but Vought made clear as author of a Project 2025 chapter on presidential authority that he wants the post to wield more direct power. “The Director must view his job as the best, most comprehensive approximation of the President’s mind,” Vought wrote. The OMB, he wrote, “is a President’s air-traffic control system” and should be “involved in all aspects of the White House policy process,” becoming “powerful enough to override implementing agencies’ bureaucracies.” Trump did not go into such details when naming Vought but implicitly endorsed aggressive action. Vought, the president-elect said, “knows exactly how to dismantle the Deep State” — Trump’s catch-all for federal bureaucracy—and would help “restore fiscal sanity.” In June, speaking on former Trump aide Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast, Vought relished the potential tension: “We’re not going to save our country without a little confrontation.” Vought could help Musk and Trump remake government’s role and scope The strategy of further concentrating federal authority in the presidency permeates Project 2025’s and Trump’s campaign proposals. Vought’s vision is especially striking when paired with Trump’s proposals to dramatically expand the president’s control over federal workers and government purse strings—ideas intertwined with the president-elect tapping mega-billionaire Elon Musk and venture capitalist Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a “Department of Government Efficiency.” Trump in his first term sought to remake the federal civil service by reclassifying tens of thousands of federal civil service workers — who have job protection through changes in administration—as political appointees, making them easier to fire and replace with loyalists. Currently, only about 4,000 of the federal government’s roughly 2 million workers are political appointees. President Joe Biden rescinded Trump’s changes. Trump can now reinstate them. Meanwhile, Musk’s and Ramaswamy’s sweeping “efficiency” mandates from Trump could turn on an old, defunct constitutional theory that the president—not Congress—is the real gatekeeper of federal spending. In his “Agenda 47,” Trump endorsed so-called “impoundment,” which holds that when lawmakers pass appropriations bills, they simply set a spending ceiling, but not a floor. The president, the theory holds, can simply decide not to spend money on anything he deems unnecessary. Vought did not venture into impoundment in his Project 2025 chapter. But, he wrote, “The President should use every possible tool to propose and impose fiscal discipline on the federal government. Anything short of that would constitute abject failure.” Trump’s choice immediately sparked backlash. “Russ Vought is a far-right ideologue who has tried to break the law to give President Trump unilateral authority he does not possess to override the spending decisions of Congress (and) who has and will again fight to give Trump the ability to summarily fire tens of thousands of civil servants,” said Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, a Democrat and outgoing Senate Appropriations chairwoman. Reps. Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Melanie Stansbury of New Mexico, leading Democrats on the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, said Vought wants to “dismantle the expert federal workforce” to the detriment of Americans who depend on everything from veterans’ health care to Social Security benefits. “Pain itself is the agenda,” they said. Homan and Miller reflect Trump’s and Project 2025’s immigration overlap Trump’s protests about Project 2025 always glossed over overlaps in the two agendas. Both want to reimpose Trump-era immigration limits. Project 2025 includes a litany of detailed proposals for various US immigration statutes, executive branch rules and agreements with other countries — reducing the number of refugees, work visa recipients and asylum seekers, for example. Miller is one of Trump’s longest-serving advisers and architect of his immigration ideas, including his promise of the largest deportation force in US history. As deputy policy chief, which is not subject to Senate confirmation, Miller would remain in Trump’s West Wing inner circle. “America is for Americans and Americans only,” Miller said at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally on Oct. 27. “America First Legal,” Miller’s organization founded as an ideological counter to the American Civil Liberties Union, was listed as an advisory group to Project 2025 until Miller asked that the name be removed because of negative attention. Homan, a Project 2025 named contributor, was an acting US Immigration and Customs Enforcement director during Trump’s first presidency, playing a key role in what became known as Trump’s “family separation policy.” Previewing Trump 2.0 earlier this year, Homan said: “No one’s off the table. If you’re here illegally, you better be looking over your shoulder.” Project 2025 contributors slated for CIA and Federal Communications chiefs John Ratcliffe, Trump’s pick to lead the CIA, was previously one of Trump’s directors of national intelligence. He is a Project 2025 contributor. The document’s chapter on US intelligence was written by Dustin Carmack, Ratcliffe’s chief of staff in the first Trump administration. Reflecting Ratcliffe’s and Trump’s approach, Carmack declared the intelligence establishment too cautious. Ratcliffe, like the chapter attributed to Carmack, is hawkish toward China. Throughout the Project 2025 document, Beijing is framed as a US adversary that cannot be trusted. Brendan Carr, the senior Republican on the Federal Communications Commission, wrote Project 2025’s FCC chapter and is now Trump’s pick to chair the panel. Carr wrote that the FCC chairman “is empowered with significant authority that is not shared” with other FCC members. He called for the FCC to address “threats to individual liberty posed by corporations that are abusing dominant positions in the market,” specifically “Big Tech and its attempts to drive diverse political viewpoints from the digital town square.” He called for more stringent transparency rules for social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube and “empower consumers to choose their own content filters and fact checkers, if any.” Carr and Ratcliffe would require Senate confirmation for their posts.
